Obituary for Robert J. "Bob" Van Akin

Robert J. Van Akin, 71, of Doylestown passed away on Wednesday October 31, 2018 at his home surrounded by his loving family. He was the husband of Teresa (nee Rutherford) Van Akin for 44 years.
Bob was born in Weehawken, NJ., the son of the late Samuel and Virginia Van Akin. He graduated in 1973 from Delaware Valley College with a Bachelor’s Degree in Chemistry. Bob served in the US Army during the Vietnam Era and was honorably discharged.
Bob was employed with Selas Corporation, Powell Electronics and Beaumont Birch as an estimator and buyer. He became a self –employed contractor and retired in 2009.
In his free time, Bob enjoyed hunting, fishing, camping and spending time with his Golden Retriever, Cody. He volunteered with Boy Scout Troop 133 as a Council member for many years. He was a member of the Paletown Rod & Gun Club, the Souderton-Harylesville Game, Fish & Forestry Association, and was a former President of the Warrington Jaycees from 1979-1980.
In addition to his wife, Bob is survived by his son David A. Van Akin (Amy), and his grandchildren Catherine, Courtney and Camden. He was the brother of Bonnie J. Purdy and brother in law of Deborah Callaghan and Andrew Rutherford (Maria). He is also survived by several nieces and nephews.
A memorial service celebrating Bob’s life will be held on Wednesday November 7th at 11:00am at the Shelly Funeral Home, 1460 Easton Rd., Warrington Pa., where the family will receive friends after 10:00am until the time of service. Internment will be private.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions sent to the American Cancer Society or the National Kidney Foundation.
