Obituary for Lisa Ann Lockwood

Lisa Ann Lockwood
Lisa Ann Lockwood died suddenly at her home in New York City. Born in Mexico City, Mexico, she was the daughter of Carol Ann and Leigh Lockwood of Buckingham. She graduated from Buckingham Elementary, the Lawrenceville School, Gettysburg College, and New York University. At Buckingham, Lisa won the principal’s and music awards. At Lawrenceville, she was elected woman of the year in her house, was a peer group counselor, honor student, and played varsity squash, JV field hockey and JV lacrosse. She volunteered at the school camp for inner city youth which ignited her lifelong love of community service and teaching. Her first interest was always to give a helping hand where she could.
At Gettysburg she was an honors student and captained the all Greek annual fund raiser which set a record for donations. She earned a Master’s Degree with honors from NYU in early childhood education and began her successful career teaching in the New York City Public School system. Her first assignment was in a neighborhood so rough she had to be escorted to and from the subway every day, yet she eventually won over the parents of students in her care by constant communication, early morning meetings, and home baked muffins. She continued teaching in a different neighborhood for nine years after.
Her mother and father recall her walking down the sidewalk outside of school while literally dozens of youngsters reached through the school fence to high five her. The outpouring of gifts and cards she received at the end of each school year were indications of parental appreciation for the positive influence in their children’s lives.
Her love of children was rivaled by her love of cats, many of which she rescued and kept -- far too many for her small NY apartment, according to her mother. It is difficult to picture Lisa without a cat in her arms or kneeling to talk to a young child at eye level.
A memorial service for Lisa will be held at 1:30 PM, on Sunday July 13, 2014 in the Edith Memorial Chapel
at the Lawrenceville School 2500 Main Street (route 206) Lawrenceville, New Jersey.
