Obituary for Donald H. Bartells

Donald Hamilton Bartells, a resident of Pipersville, Pennsylvania, formerly of Asbury and Quakertown, New Jersey, died on Wednesday, March 2, 2022 at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia following a long battle with cancer. He was 73.

Born in Newton, New Jersey, Don was a son of the late Walter “Bud” and Elizabeth “Pat” (Cook) Bartells of Upper Black Eddy, Pennsylvania. Don earned his Red Seal Engineering License as a boiler room engineer in the United States Navy. He later worked as the Chief Maintenance Engineer at the Mountainview Youth Correctional Facility, and worked for the Hunterdon Medical Center in Flemington, NJ. He enjoyed fixing Ford cars and old tractors, and raising pigs, chickens, and vegetables. One of Don’s most remarkable accomplishments was designing and building the Bartells’ family home.

Don was the widower of Michelle A. “Mickey” (Riddle) Bartells, who died in 2016. They enjoyed 39 years of marriage, spending much of their time in retirement traveling the country, and in work or recreation around their home. Don loved recent holidays with his whole family together, and he cherished spending time with his five grandchildren, especially canning applesauce or peaches and giving tractor rides. Don remembered fondly his time as a boy hunting and trapping with his dogs, and those hobbies resumed in his retirement. He took great pleasure in going on hunting trips across the country with his son and training with his dog, Bailey.

Don is survived by a daughter, Megan (Bartells) Shelly, and her husband, Ben, of Pittsburgh, and their children Joseph, Sarah, and Anna; and by a son, Jacob Bartells, and his wife, Kim, of Perkasie and their daughters Brooke and Blake. He is also survived by his brother, Robert Bartells, of Ottsville.

A private burial ceremony will take place on March 15, 2022 at Washington’s Crossing National Cemetery. A memorial pig roast to honor Don will be held on Saturday, July 16, 2022 at the Bartells’ Home. Friends and family far and wide are invited to gather and share stories, memories, and some good food & beer.
