Obituary for Dewey H. "Bucky" Bunch

Dewey "Bucky" Howard Bunch of Haring Road, Plumsteadville, formerly of Horsham, died Thursday, March 12, 2009, in his home. He was 69.

He was the husband of Vera Marie Bunch.

Born in Horsham, he was the son of the late Dewey and Helen (Thompson) Bunch. Bucky graduated from Hatboro-Horsham High School in 1957.

Hew was proud to have served in the U.S. Navy. He also enjoyed fast cars and fun before entering the Navy.

He was the retired farmer/owner of Shan-Gri-La Sod Farm. He took great pride in the family business of Shan-Gri-La Farm, which his father began in 1937 as a poultry farm.

He moved to Plumsteadville in 1967 and built Shan-Gri-La into a successful sod farm. He retired in 2004, when his son Chip took over and continues to operate the business today.

Bucky was always known for his ingenuity. He always had a project. With his innovative ability to fix anything, no project was ever too big for him to tackle.

He was proud of his family and he took great pleasure spending time with his grandchildren. His sense of adventure was also well known. He loved spending time at his hunting camp and traveling in his recreational vehicle, especially during their winters in Florida. There they stayed at the Indian reservation in southern Florida, where his friends enjoyed his evening bonfires at Buckyville. He would often take long rides exploring the countryside with his dog by his side as a constant companion. Although he could not swim he loved his boat and pond and could often be seen, wearing his straw hat, riding his pontoon boat on his pond at home. He is remembered as always laughing; life was good for him.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by his six children, Deborah Young and her husband, Scott, and children, Bryn and Leslie, Sherry Labs and her husband, Kevin, and children, Shelby, Allison and Meredith, Sandra Harrison and her husband, Ted, and children, Tyler, Savanna and Nicolette, Bruce Bunch and his wife, Jeannette, and children, Eric, Megan, Kelly and Ryan, Lisa Labs and her husband, Brooke, and children, Olivia, Brooke and Morgan, and Dewey "Chip" Bunch III and his wife, Beth, and children, Ben and Julia. He also is survived by two sisters, Joan Carter and Priscilla Fuller; and his nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister, Nancy and his brother, Robert.

Friends and family are invited to Bucky's memorial service at 2 p.m. Tuesday, March 17, in Doylestown United Methodist Church, 320 Swamp Road, Doylestown, PA 18901, where family will receive friends from 1 p.m. prior to the service.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Dewey's name to Doylestown United Methodist Church at the above address.
