Obituary for Barbara U. Funke

Barbara U. Funke, of Tinicum Twp., passed away on Thursday, January 5, 2023 surrounded by her family. She was 79.

Barbara was the loving wife of Dr. Alfred H. Funke III.

Barb was born and grew up in Botnang just west of Stuttgart, Germany. In 1960 she met her husband Al who was stationed at U.S. Army Nellingen Barracks and they married in 1962. They moved back to the states in 1964 and raised their 4 children in Ferndale, Pennsylvania. If you ever visited the Funke Funny Farm you know that as soon as you drove in, you would be greeted by kids, dogs, chickens, ducks, cows, horses, and even a wild turkey called Franky. Barbara loved all animals great and small. One of her greatest loves was for her dogs which were always by her side morning, noon, and night.

Barb was always active in the community from being a parent volunteer at school, a sports booster, to be an active supporter of our U.S. military. One of Barb's proudest moments was becoming an American citizen in August 1993. She had a strong love for the USA, her family and friends.

Barb loved working with her hands, from decorating Christmas cookies to landscaping beautiful gardens. You knew if you saw Barbara with gloves and a shovel a new garden was in the works and a trip to find flat rocks to build walls for the gardens was in your future. She took great pride in her home, created a warm and welcoming space that reflected her and Al's fun-loving personalities.

Barb loved to travel, listen to music, read, cook and bake, entertain family and friends, and dancing well into the night. She was fun loving and usually the last one to leave a good party. Barbara will be remembered for her great love for family, dogs, friends, her German accent, great cooking, and sense of humor.

In addition to her husband, Alfred, Barbara will be deeply missed be her children, Alfred H. Funke IV (Susan), Frederick Funke (Amy), Heidi Petersohn, Cristine A. Funke; 6 grandchildren, Alfred V, Lily, Drew, Jack, Anna, Luke; and her brother, Gerhard Gramm (Gerda).

Barbara’s services will be held privately.
